Chapter 6: No Man, No Cry
The Monroes Mansion at Night
“You did what?!” Shannon responded a lot louder than she intended to.
Rea frantically hushed her, “Shhhh! You’re the only other person who knows. Let’s keep it that way.”
“Okay, okay, but seriously, though, how was it?” Shannon asked.
“The kiss? It was… It made me remember the old times together, when everything was blissful. I kinda miss those days, sneaking around like two teenage lovers.” Rea said to Shannon as she fondly remembered a morning spent with Marvin in Western Espansy.
“Hey… Don’t tell me you’re considering getting back together with him!” Shannon said, shaking her head several times.
Rea sighed, “Shannon, I think about that all the time but, regardless of how I feel about him, we can’t be together ever again, especially after the way he broke things off. And also, it’s not fair on Don or Maritza.”
She wanted to say something more but she couldn’t, not then and not there, Marvin being just a few steps away.
Rea excused herself and went to the bathroom near the living room. Standing at the bathroom sink, she took a moment just to steady herself. Her hands were shaky and tears were starting to fill her eyes. Rea was never the type to share her deepest sadness, not even with Shannon. She had it in her head that other people would just call it karma.
No one knew how much the relationship with Marvin affected her. After the news came out about Rea and Marvin in Western Espansy, Marvin completely disappeared from her life as if he never knew her. He eventually returned a year later, not with the love and affection she expected but with blackmail.
Rea pulled herself together and stepped out of the bathroom, determined to get through the party. But patiently waiting in the living room for Rea was the one person she was trying so hard to not think of.
“Hello gorgeous.” Was the greeting she got from Marvin Donnefeild, “Don’t you know it’s rude to not greet your guests? Why don’t you give me a little tour of the house? You can start with that loveless bedroom you share with Don.” He teased.
Rea brushed past him, “Marvin, I don’t have time for this. Both our spouses are here so—”
Marvin pulled her towards him before she could finish her sentence, “I won’t pretend that nothing happened. That kiss – it told me everything I needed to know.”
“Oh really? What’s that?” Rea impatiently asked, worried that someone might walk in on them.
“You still have feelings for me.”
Rea rolled her eyes, “That’s nonsense! That kiss should have never happened.”
For a moment, Marvin looked genuinely upset, “Oh, come on, Rea. You don’t mean that. Tell you what, let’s start over. I leave Maritza and you leave Don. We can start our lives over together, just you and me all the way, forever.”
Rea pushed him away, “Do you honestly expect me to believe that? I know how short-lived your ‘forever’ is. You’re just trying to trick me into leaving Don for good so that you can drop me all over again.”
It was the moment that Rea had been bracing herself for and now that it had come, she was strong enough to reject Marvin and all his lies and that made her feel proud of herself.
